TCHS History
The Todd County Historical Society was organized in 1928 as the “Old Settlers Association”. The first officers elected were: George W. Johnson, Clarissa, President; F.A. Zappe, Philbrook, Vice President; Raymond A. Lee, Long Prairie, Secretary-Treasurer; Directors: Peter Wester, Clarissa, A.J. Gibson, Long Prairie, George Sarver, Bertha. In 1937 the name of the organization was changed from “The Old Settler’ Association” to “The Todd County Historical Society”.
In 1929, the Log Cabin, future home for the society, was built at the Todd County Fairgrounds. At that time, the building was opened to the public for viewing historical displays, during the three days of the fair.
Today, the Historical Society Museum is located in the former Hart Press building. At this museum, you can observe murals depicting the the history and lifestyles in the 1840’s and 1900’s, and view artifacts of Todd Country. To learn more about Todd County history or geneology, we invite you to tour the exhibit halls and in depth research center.
Along with information on the history of Todd County, the museum also offers a research and learning center for the family genealogist and historian.
